Abstract
[...] paintings on Tao themes that claim to predate the sixth century should be examined with particular care with regard to authenticity, especially their dating. If Tao Yuanming was a renowned poet and scholar, more important was that he became a cultural icon much respected by the literati, who admired not only the naturalism of his poetry but also the qualities from which that poetry sprang: his aloof attitude toward fame, fortune, and social status, and his integrity in retiring to preserve his ideals in a time of political turmoil.
