Abstract

Reviews "Speaking with Vampires: Rumor and History in Colonial Africa" (Luise White, University of California Press, 2000, 352p, $50), which explores the meaning of a particular variety of the flotsam that people use to patch together a real or supernatural understanding of their lives as a continuous and integrated experience. Notes that White sensitively utilizes a plethora of traditional narratives to describe the cultural assimilation of colonial African peoples.
