Abstract
The behavior of the meniscus is examined with particular attention to fundamental aspects related to the edge-defined fiber growth (EFG) process. It is shown that multiple solutions exist to the axisymmetric form of the Laplace-Young equation. A variety of meniscus behavior is caused by interaction of Bond number, pressurization, aspect ratio, and contact angle. The directional bias is found to be significant for higher Bond numbers and aspect ratios. There are cases for which commonly adopted equilibrium shapes may be unstable and the consequent dynamic behavior must be considered. A simplified hysteresis model for the contact angle at the top of meniscus was used to simulate quasi-equilibrium dynamics. (O.G.)
