Abstract
This paper reports characteristics of activities of daily living (ADL) of older Mexican American adults. Two hundred and fifty free-living older Mexican American adults (125 men and 125 women, aged 65 to 98 years old) were interviewed in person for this study. The Duke University Older Americans and Resources and Services (OARS) Multidimensional questionnaire was used for the assessment of the ADL levels. Study participants reported their levels of difficulty in performing instrumental and physical activities of daily living. Older Mexican American adults report significant difficulty with daily living activities including ability to get to places out of walking distance, shopping for groceries, household activities including cleaning, taking their own medicine, ability to eat on their own, ability to dress and undress themselves, grooming activities, ability to get in and out of bed, and ability to get to the bathroom on time.
