Abstract
Due to different developmental trajectories, Chinese and English vocabulary systems have unique features of their own. Chinese vocabulary system has a long history of formation and wide geographical distribution. In addition, there are big differences between written and oral vocabulary in Chinese due to historical reasons. Chinese vocabulary system has also been influenced by cultural elements, cognition concepts, and political elements. Comparing to Indo-European and other language vocabulary system, the main characteristics of Chinese vocabulary system lies in the isolation and multiple meanings of individual Chinese characters. The meaning of each Chinese character is closely related to the neighboring characters in sentences, which is different from morphemes and roots. This will inevitably bring big challenges to Chinese learners with English background in the vocabulary learning process.
