In this paper components of a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) system are discussed. Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is one of the forms of the CIM concept. Features of FMSs as well as differences between FMSs and classical manufacturing systems are presented in a form of eight observations. One of the most important components of a CIM system is a scheduling subsystem. Its environment and a structure of the scheduling record are discussed. Design and management issues in CIM systems are highlighted.
