Abstract
The problem is treated of estimating vector fields governed by linear differential or functional equations from data collected at a finite number of locations. Direct application of optimal regression experimental design makes the uncertainty in the estimates as small as possible with a given measurement effort and specifies where the measurements should be taken. Error bounds are developed for the variances of estimates of the maximum intensity of a given function and the location giving this maximum. Applications are given to problems in air pollution monitoring and acoustics.
