Ground-water quality monitoring strategies are designed for environments ranging from the complex to the very simple. Complexity is characterized by socio-economic, public health, and biogeochemical interactions in space and time. Arguments are offered to show that empirical methods are cost-effective for the more complex, while process-based methods are appropriate for the relatively simpler environments.
