Abstract
We examine the use of specific attenuation A(h) at X-band for rainfall estimates obtained from the Iowa XPOL-5 radar at locations over 25 gauges for a 9-hour event during the NASA Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) field experiments. We derive the specific attenuation for each gauge from the attenuation correction procedures applied for the corresponding range profiles. We compare our method with the rain rates computed using the specific differential propagation phase K-dp. Our results show that both methods yield a good agreement with the gauges but the A(h)-based rainfall estimates have lower overall normalized bias than the ones obtained from K-dp.
