Abstract
Interdisciplinary care teams are increasingly utilized to help care providers synthesize knowledge from different disciplines to address complex patient needs. Effective coordination of diverse expertise plays a vital role in translating the knowledge advantage of interdisciplinary care teams into team performance. Drawing on transactive memory theory, we examined the effect of expertise recognition, a cognitive mechanism for expertise coordination, on team performance. Evidence from 26 interdisciplinary care teams suggests that cognitive accuracy in expertise recognition is associated with better patient outcomes. Moreover, cognitive accuracy and consensus in expertise recognition have greater positive effects on performance in teams with higher knowledge stock. Implications of these findings for care team practice and research are discussed.
