Functional Anthropometry of Older Mexican American Adults

Abstract
Very few functional anthropometry measures exist in literature for older Mexican Americans. Such information is vital for design of products, daily living environments, and work activities for older Mexican American men and women, as studies show that they report the most difficulty in performing activities of daily living, compared to other older adult groups. Hence, the objectives of this study were to determine baseline convenient reach data for Mexican American elderly based on limiting outer fingertip and grip reaches with arms positioned in sagittal and transverse planes. Older Mexican American women and men aged 60-85 participated in the study. Stature, several vertical fingertip and grip reaches, and several horizontal fingertip and grip reaches were measured. Summary statistics, percentiles, and correlations between dimensions were generated for older Mexican American females and males. Overall comparisons of weighted means of available reach dimensions between older Mexican Americans and other older population groups showed significant differences in most functional reach dimensions.
