Abstract
Artificially intelligent (AI) agents are becoming pervasive in a variety of domains, which means AI accidents will become increasingly common. Across four studies this research examines the "AI blame penalty" -- the tendency for consumers to blame and punish AI agents and their companies more than human agents following accidents. Here, Krause-Galoni et al. find evidence for the blame penalty of AI agents over humans after accidents due to counterfactuals. They also reveal when brands are instead blamed less for AI agent accidents. Specifically, when perceived intent comes into play, humans are blamed more because AI agents are less capable of intention.
