LES of flow past a submerged circular patch of vegetation

Abstract
The study of flow past submerged porous cylinders is important because relatively circular patches of submerged vegetation are often observed in vegetated regions of river reaches. To better understand flow and turbulence structure around porous submerged patches of vegetation, we conduct fully three-dimensional eddy resolving simulations of flow past a porous circular cylinder with a Solid Volume Fraction (SVF) of 11.4% and with a relative submergence depth of 50%. Both simulations are conducted at a Reynolds number of 10,000 defined with D and the bulk velocity of the fully developed incoming turbulent flow. The structure of the mean flow and turbulence within the wake in the two cases and the bed friction velocity distributions that determine the capacity of the flow to entrain sediment within and around the patch are compared and sediment entrainment mechanisms around and within the porous patch are discussed.
