Abstract
This paper discusses a series of studies that has been conducted for the purpose of building a list of affect terms that are appropriate for the Beethoven piano sonata repertoire. In the first study, participants chose affects from a list of 91 terms without listening to music. In the second study, participants chose five affect terms for each of fifteen excerpts they listened to from the same list of 91 terms. In the final study, participants provided free-responses descriptions of the perceived affective expression of the same fifteen excerpts. In a cross-investigation of the results between the studies, nine affective categories are suggested for use in the Beethoven piano sonata literature. A methodology for building a repertoire-appropriate taxonomy of affective expression is suggested for any repertoire.
