Abstract
Wastewater pumping is one of the significant energy consumers for wastewater treatment plants. It typically consumes 10% to 20% of the electricity used by the whole plant. To reduce the energy consumption, a data-driven approach is presented to model and optimize wastewater pumping process. Data-mining algorithm, multilayer perceptron neural network, is used to build the pumping energy model. The optimization problem formulated by integrating the model is solved by an improved harmony search algorithm to find optimal pump configurations and pump speed settings. Significant energy reduction is observed when the pumping station running under optimized optimal settings.
