Six different types of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) are analysed. The limits and versatility of each type of FMS depend to a great extent on robots. As a result of FMS analysis the basic FMS functions, which can be automated by robots are specified. In order to perform these functions at a satisfactory level, the design of robots has to be application-oriented. Three groups of industrial robots are characterized. Some of the robot vehicle issues in FMS's are also discussed. Typical applications of industrial robots and robot vehicles in FMS's are described.
