Safe motherhood for HIV-discordant couples: Qualitative findings

Abstract
We conducted qualitative interviews with 11 individuals and 11 couples who participated in a program offering assisted conception for HIV-discordant couples in Milan, Italy. The participants were strongly motivated to conceive a biological child and needed assisted conception because adoption by families with HIV is not possible in Italy. They considered the lack of treatment centers, the logistical difficulties they faced, and problems with patient support for HIV-discordant couples to be discriminatory practices. We found that failure to conceive led to depression among program participants, while success greatly improved their quality of life and produced a renewed sense of normalcy. Couples argued that safe assisted conception services should be offered to HIV-discordant couples and that withholding such treatment is ethically unjustified. The safety of the procedure, however, remains to be determined.
