Abstract
This paper presents the findings of laboratory studies conducted to determine the extents of scale effects in very small-scale hydraulic models of the flow field around a river-training dike, wing-dam, or abutment placed on a fixed, flatbed channel. It is shown that horizontal scale influences model simulation of thalweg alignment (streamwise line of maximum velocity) and flow-separation regions. As horizontal-length scale (prototype/model ratio) and vertical distortion increase, thalweg alignment and separation regions differ quite markedly from their prototype values. As length scale and vertical distortion increase, the thalweg becomes less sinuous, and the separation region shortens behind the model dike.
