Abstract
Interactions of a solidification front with an embedded particle is studied by numerical simulations of the thermal transport and phase change. A sharp solid-fluid interface method is used to track the interface. The results of a phase change analysis coupled with a dynamic force model for particle pushing is compared to that of previous models which have used a model for the solidification process as well, as opposed to directly calculating the solidification problem. Our results show that solution of the phase boundary evolution and coupling with a dynamic front-particle interaction model leads to pushing/engulfment interactions that differ from more simplistic models. The method employed in this paper allows for inclusion of the effects of thermal property differences between the particle and the matrix, thus enabling detailed analysis of the role of thermal transport in particle engulfment phenomena.
