THE USE OF NATURAL GAS BLENDS WITH SYNGAS FROM BIOMASS IN GAS MICRO TURBINE THERMAL PERFORMANCE AND EMISSIONS TESTS

Abstract
The operation of power equipment such as a gas micro turbine using renewable fuels is an interesting alternative when it comes to sustainability, especially when using energy from biomass. Within the context, this article presents a methodology and the results of a thermal and emissions test of a micro turbine, operating with blends of natural gas with syngas product of the biomass gasification (rice husk). The experimental planning included trial runs with a mix of 75% natural gas and 25% syngas, further increased to 50% natural gas and 50% syngas with a micro turbine operating at partial loads from 5 until 30 kWe, in a period of 10 minutes. Analyses of the exhaust gas emissions were carried out to verify the impacts on the turbine performance. The maximum efficiency - of 26% - was obtained when using 100% natural gas. Tests with mixtures of 50% of natural gas with 50% of syngas resulted in an efficiency of 22.5%. The last case using a mixture of 25% syngas and 75% of natural gas gave an efficiency of 24.3%. During the tests, it was verified that for any alternative there were not significant changes in the thermal behavior of the micro turbine.
