Abstract
Tanaka and Ohba investigate whether Japanese-learning children show a relative clause (RC) preference in comprehension and production, using a picture selection task and an elicited production task. The elicited production task further investigates the effects of animacy, an underexplored factor in the production of Japanese RCs. The results show a subject RC preference in production but not comprehension. They also found an animacy effect in the production of both RC types. They also briefly explain Japanese RCs, describe their methodology and report the results from the picture-based elicited production task and the picture selection task, and offer a general discussion and their conclusions.
