Trunk Muscle Myoelectric Activity in Older Mexican American Adults

Abstract
Among all older people, older Mexican Americans report most difficulty in performing activities of daily living, especially in activities requiring use of trunk muscles. To gain a quantitative understanding of trunk muscle myoelectric activity in older Mexican American people, three trunk movements were studied - lateral bending of the trunk (right and left sides), axial twisting of the trunk, and trunk flexion. Eighteen older Mexican American adults participated in the study. The MESPEC 4000 surface EMG system was used to monitor myoelectric activity as participants performed the three trunk movements. Task specific myoelectric activity of 4 muscle groups (right and left Rectus Abdominis, right and left Obliques, right and left Erector Spinae, and right and left Multifidus) was observed. Normalized median responses indicate that 90% of older adults in this study used 100% of their maximum voluntary contraction while performing all three trunk movements. Friedman's test results show that right obliques was used to different extent in lateral bending, axial twisting and forward flexion activities (p < .05). Normalized myoelectric activity for all other muscles were not significantly different for the three trunk movements. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
