Abstract
In this study we examine how a particular technology, the personal response system (PRS), is capable of transforming the culture of the classroom from silent and passive to interactive and participatory. We focus on one particular class in the domain of biology, animal physiology. Through classroom observations and interviews with the instructor we reveal how PRS impacted the instructor's pedagogy and the classroom environment, and discuss how aspects of the university classroom culture are deeply resistant to change. By studying the experiences of using PRS, we aim to understand the process that helps break the culture of silence, and bring student voices to the forefront.
