Abstract
In June of 2001, a five-day investigation into the contribution of airborne toxic pollutants by the city of Milwaukee was conducted. The purpose of this study was to assess the importance of the Milwaukee area as a source of atmospheric toxics. Although there are few reports concerning toxics in Milwaukee, the history of industrial prevalence and sediment contamination suggests that it may be an important source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The field study was conducted at the Great Lakes WATER Institute, located in an industrial area just south of the Milwaukee downtown, on the shore of Lake Michigan. Two High-Volume air samplers (Hi-Vols) and a pair of Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactors (MOUDIs) were set up on the roof of the Institute to collect atmospheric samples. In addition, meteorological conditions were measured and recorded utilizing a 3-D Sonic Anemometer and a Krypton Hygrometer. The air samples have been analyzed for specific POPs, including PCBs and other organic compounds. The atmospheric contribution of pollutants such as PCBs, by the city of Milwaukee, has been compared to similar urban sources, including the Chicago/Gary industrial region. This study included an assessment of contribution of POPs in the gas phase and associated with fine particles.
