Abstract
This dataset from the Iowa Superfund Research Program (isrp) includes PCB sulfate concentrations from serum samples collected from individuals living in Columbus Junction (CJ), Iowa (N=24) and East Chicago (EC), Indiana (N=24). PCB sulfates in serum samples were extracted and then enzymatically hydrolyzed to the corresponding OH-PCBs with Helix pomatia sulfatase that had been highly purified by affinity chromatography. The resulting OH-PCBs were converted to their corresponding methoxy-PCB (MeO-PCB) derivatives which were analyzed by GC-MS/MS. Comparison of results of incubations with and without sulfatase-catalyzed hydrolysis yielded the concentration of PCB sulfates in the original sample of serum. The maximum number of PCB sulfate congeners quantitated was limited to the 74 MeO-PCB standards available. The total concentration of these PCB sulfates determined in individuals within the CJ group ranged from 530 to 6700 pg/g of serum, while the total of these PCB sulfates determined in individuals within the EC group ranged from 110 to 8900 pg/g of serum.
