Abstract
Objective: Cross-culturally adapt the Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment – Achilles (VISA-A) Sedentary for Spanish-speaking populations and determine its measurement properties.
Design: Translation followed a standardized multi-step process. Measurement properties were assessed over two visits with one week between assessments.
Setting: Native Spanish-speaking participants from the Americas and Europe were recruited to complete online surveys.
Participants: A total of 90 individuals: Achilles tendinopathy (n=54), foot pain (n=19), pain-free controls (n=17).
Methods: Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach’s alpha, and test-retest reliability using intraclass coefficients (ICC). Structural validity was evaluated using a confirmatory factor analysis. Discriminant validity was assessed as the differences in the Spanish VISA-A Sedentary scores between groups. Convergent validity was calculated as the Pearson correlation between the Spanish VISA-A Sedentary, heel raise pain, and psychological factors.
Main Measures: Participants completed the Spanish VISA-A Sedentary, the Spanish VISA-A, and rated their pain during a single-leg heel-raise task.
Results: The Spanish VISA-A Sedentary demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (α=0.816, 95%CI: 0.77 to 0.86) and good test-retest reliability (ICC=0.85, 95%CI:0.77 to 0.89). Convergent validity was supported by moderate to strong correlations with the heel raise pain (r= -0.43, 95%CI: -0.58 to -0.24) and the VISA-A Spanish (r=0.80, 95%CI: 0.71 to 0.86). The Spanish VISA-A Sedentary scores were significantly lower in individuals with Achilles tendinopathy compared to those with foot pain (p=0.021) and pain free controls (p<0.001). The Spanish translation retained a 2-factor structure.
Conclusions: The Spanish VISA-A Sedentary is a reliable and valid patient reported outcome measure of Achilles tendinopathy disability.
