Abstract
This dataset compiles information on flash flood events across the West Africa domain (FlashFloodEvents.xslx)from multiple authoritative sources, covering the period from 2013 to 2023. The dataset is organized into five sheets:
Flash Flood Database: Extracted flash flood events from the Global Flash Flood Database specific to West Africa. For further details on this source, contact Andrew Kruczkiewicz (ajk2207@columbia.edu).
EMDAT: Flash flood events from the publicly accessible EMDAT database (https://emdat.be), filtered to include only events within the West Africa region.
Flood List: A comprehensive list of flood events across West Africa recorded on the Flood List website (https://floodlist.com/Africa). Flash flood events are specifically identified within this list.
Compiled events: A compiled master list of flash flooding events in West Africa, derived from the integration of the previous three sources: the Global Flash Flood Database, EMDAT, and Flood List.
Identified Flash Flood Events: A focused subset of flash flood events selected for EF5 evaluation, including only those events that appear in at least two of the source datasets.
Additionally, a detailed list of all river discharge monitoring stations from the Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC) relevant to West Africa and Ghana is provided in the file GRDC_stations.xlsx. This includes station locations, descriptions, and other metadata useful for hydrological analysis and validation.
This dataset provides a valuable resource for flood risk assessment, hydrological studies, and regional disaster management planning in West Africa.
