- Public Abstract (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to identify indicators of effective high school band teaching for use in the teacher evaluation process and to compare perceptions of band directors to perceptions of principals on each indicator of effective teaching. Indicators included teacher attributes (e.g., communication skills), student learning outcomes (e.g., reading notated music), and program outcomes (e.g., placement at a competition). An additional purpose of the study was to investigate the extent to which perceptions of teaching effectiveness differ based on school size, band program size, longevity in the current school, teaching experience, administrative experience, education, and gender.
Iowa high school band directors and principals agreed that teacher attributes were more appropriate indicators of teaching effectiveness than student learning outcomes or program outcomes. Principals and band directors rated communicating effectively, maintaining high expectations for all students, and creating an inclusive classroom environment as the top indicators of band director effectiveness. Principals were more likely than band directors to agree that individual band program outcomes were indicators of band director effectiveness. Male band directors and respondents from larger schools and larger band programs were more likely to agree that some competitive components were indicators of band director effectiveness. Results from this study can assist undergraduate music teacher preparation programs, music education associations, and high school administrators and band directors in the teacher evaluation process.
