- Public Abstract (ETD)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the role of the double bass in Brazilian orchestral music, particularly in relation to the evolution of technical and pedagogical materials designed specifically to aid its study.
There are many collections of excerpts of the commonly performed orchestral literature available; however, those of the Brazilian works occupy little space in these collections, leaving a large gap in the bassists preparation process regarding the learning of this repertoire.
The present research identifies and studies a few of the Brazilian orchestral works that present technically and musically difficult passages written for the double bass. These highlighted passages are examined in relation to technical issues (bowing, fingering, shifting, and instrument range) as well as larger interpretive and stylistic concerns.
The thesis suggests exercises and practicing approaches addressing the technical and musical aspects of those passages.
In addition to its pedagogical usefulness for the teaching of the double bass, the study intends to contribute to the dissemination and the awareness (worldwide) of Brazilian orchestral music, favoring its inclusion in the Brazilian and international educational programs, and within professional concert programs.
