Cue next scene: an album of new works for trumpet and interactive electronics for the intermediate trumpeter

Abstract
The use of interactive electronics is growing in both commercial and classical music genres. Software programs such as Ableton Live Suite™, Pure Data™, SuperCollider™, MaxMSP™, and others are used to emulate cost-prohibitive hardware by composers and performing artists. In addition to hardware emulation, these programs are also used to create full musical compositions.
Each work was created or selected for inclusion in this project with the intent that it can be used as a teaching piece for young trumpet performers. In addition to working on trumpet performance concepts that apply to young musicians, each piece can also be used to teach new skills with electronic equipment.
This thesis explores the ways this technology can be used to create and enhance music for solo trumpet through a series of new compositions for the trumpet and interactive electronics. The use of technology in both live and recorded performances may engage a sense of excitement for listeners and creates new learning opportunities for performers.
The music and software patches for this project were composed by Matthew Bardin, Nick Fife, Evan Fowler, Tyler Katz, and Ted Moore. The album of music included in this project—Cue Next Scene was recorded by Evan Fowler in the University of Iowa School of Music Recording Studios with supervising engineer James Edel.
