This paper serves as a guide to the recording project that culminates in a high-quality album featuring selected piano compositions by Shuwen Zhang (b. 1991). Highlighting eight distinct pieces, it includes “Variations on CCTV News Theme,” “Grand Fantasia: The Earth and the New Planet,” “Ice Cream Truck,” “Scherzo No. 6: ‘The Surgical Mask’,” “Turn Me On,” “Falling Daisy by the Curtain,” “Ocean Fog,” and “Orange Cocoa Latte.” This project aims to elevate Shuwen Zhang’s solo piano works within international concert repertoires and foster appreciation for his artistry through in-depth analysis.
Shuwen Zhang, a young Chinese composer, holds a master’s degree in piano performance from the Manhattan School of Music. He gained recognition by winning first place in the 2015 Steinway Piano Composition Contest, excelling in both the “Best Advanced Original” and “Best Advanced Arrangement” categories. Since 2016, he has shared his musical expertise as a part-time professor at the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music in China.
This album is a testament to Shuwen Zhang’s creativity in crafting engaging and genre-defying pieces. The selected pieces traverse a wide spectrum of styles, from Baroque and Classical to Romantic, Jazz, and Contemporary, serving as a platform to exhibit his artistic maturity and accomplishment across diverse musical realms.
Shuwen Zhang opens listeners’ imaginations through evocative titles and innovative sound effects. By carefully choosing titles that suggest vivid imagery and emotions, he sets the stage for an immersive auditory experience, allowing listeners to engage deeply with the music and envision the narratives and landscapes he intends to convey. Shuwen Zhang invites a rich and personal interpretation of his compositions through these artistic choices.
His piano works are remarkably idiomatic to the piano, each piece is resonating emotionally and captivating listeners with its nuanced tonal palette. His transcriptions and arrangements of popular songs breathe new life into well-known tunes, infusing them with a classical essence that transcends genres. Additionally, Shuwen Zhang’s subtle sense of humor adds a delightful dimension to the listening experience, making the often-formal nature of classical music more accessible and relatable to audiences.
