- Public Abstract (ETD)
Shuwen Zhang is recognized as one of the outstanding composers of the new generation in China, having created a significant body of work across diverse genres. This recording project features two of his piano compositions: “Twenty-Four Chinese Solar Terms” and “The Chinese Zodiac.” Both works are thematically connected through the concept of time. In China, the year is divided by twenty-four distinct solar terms, each marking specific dates that align with traditional agricultural practices, guiding the growth and cultivation of crops. In parallel, the Chinese Zodiac employs twelve animals to symbolize twelve years, forming a cyclical representation of time.
The composer uses attractive musical language to vividly depict the images of these pictures and ancient traditions. His compositional style integrates Western, Chinese, and Japanese compositional approaches, creating a unique fusion of musical expressions. This recording serves not only as a medium to showcase Zhang’s innovative approach but also as a bridge to introduce traditional Chinese cultural elements to global audiences. Additionally, this project seeks to enrich the musical repertoire by bringing more characteristic works by young Chinese classical composers to the international stage.
