- Public Abstract (ETD)
This recording project features saxophone compositions by four East Asian women composers: Yukiko Nishimura ?????, Dorothy Chang, Shih-Hui Chen ???, and Miho Hazama ????.
Asian women composers contributions have not been widely acknowledged within the global classical music community. While women composers throughout history are being increasingly recognized, Asian women remain less visible and often overlooked in contemporary concert programming and academic research. Drawing on my background as a Hong Kongese saxophonist and personal influences from Japanese culture, the repertoire shares cultural heritage with me, underscoring the importance of representation and cultural identity in musical interpretation. The project also addresses challenges faced by researchers and performers, such as limited access to comprehensive databases that hinder the discovery and dissemination of works by Asian women composers. Through professional recordings, comprehensive program notes, and some resources on women composers, this project aims to increase awareness, appreciation, and encourage greater inclusion of Asian women composers in the saxophone repertoire and the wider field of contemporary music.
