- Public Abstract (ETD)
This recording project commissioned and recorded sixteen new solo vocal settings of the poetry of Dongjoo Yoon. This is the first CD recording consisting solely of art songs set to Yoon's poetry using the advanced compositional techniques currently being employed in contemporary music. This supporting essay provides Korean to English translations and conversation with the composers of each song and a brief biography of Yoon and the historical context of the Japanese Occupation.
Yoon is one of the most beloved and influential Korean poets and has been memorialized and commemorated in various ways. I am inspired and have recorded a CD of new solo vocal settings of Yoon’s poetry. Four very gifted young Korean composers, Minho Yoon, Jinwon Kim, Sanggeun Choi, and Joungmin Lee shared my enthusiasm and joined me in this project. This project introduces Korean literature, history, and music, to an American audience, which is one of the most meaningful things I can contribute to, as a Korean musician living in the United States.
