HPV Vaccinations in Pediatric Oncology Patients

Abstract
Background: HPV vaccination is essential for cancer prevention, yet vaccination rates among pediatric oncology patients remain below those of their peers, highlighting the need for targeted strategies to improve uptake in this high-risk population. Purpose: The purpose of this DNP project is to increase HPV vaccination rates among eligible pediatric oncology patients. Methods: Monthly electronic health record chart reviews were conducted for six months to evaluate HPV vaccination progression, MyChart reminder distribution, and documentation of patient education among eligible pediatric oncology patients. Findings: The results revealed an 8% increase in HPV vaccination initiation and a 14% increase in completion, with strong associations between in-clinic education and vaccine uptake and high accuracy of MyChart reminders for eligible patients. Discussion: The discussion suggests that targeted education and reminder strategies are effective in increasing HPV vaccination rates among pediatric oncology patients. The findings highlight the importance of consistent patient education and accurate reminder systems to support vaccine uptake in this high-risk population.
