Himie Voxman's Selected studies for intermediate clarinet: bringing Voxman’s pedagogical intentions into the twenty-first century through archival research and video recordings

Selected Studies for Clarinet by Himie Voxman is widely used across the United States and was created with the intention of addressing the lack of instruction in the intermediate clarinetist’s education. However, without an instructor, there is no guidance on how to approach the pieces. The musicians can only approach the pieces with the knowledge that they have, often missing key elements such as proper practice technique, stylistic choices for different musical periods, fingering choices, etc. In this project, I aim to address this gap for clarinetists and those supporting them by incorporating archival research alongside historical background, performance videos of the works, and mini-lesson videos that provide technical guidance.

The written component of the project is designed for older intermediate players and educators looking for tools to guide the performance of the first fourteen etudes in the Selected Studies for Clarinet. In conjunction with the fourteen performance videos and fourteen instructional videos, it offers a more comprehensive understanding of the pieces. The instructional videos are structured like play-along lessons and cover specific sections, offer various approaches to technical issues, and provide tools musicians can use in their personal practice time, whether for the pieces themselves or in their continued music education.
