My exploration of Zen began with a stage fright experience in 2010. The inspiration I gained through practicing Zen in my daily life led me to apply its philosophy to my piano playing and eventually helped me overcome stage fright. While words and languages cannot fully explain or describe what Zen is, writings on the topic of Zen can help people practice Zen and eventually be closer to calmness and happiness. From my personal experience, this essay expands into discussing how piano teachers can understand the philosophy of Zen and to apply its fundamental concepts in teaching pre-college students. This essay will particularly focus on the concept of impermanence as it is the least discussed concept in Zen philosophy. Other fundamental concepts, including meditation and mindfulness, are also briefly examined to provide a more complete representation of Zen.
