Improving Emergency Management in a Non-Operating Room Environment

Abstract
Background: Adverse events occurring in non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) locations are often preventable, more severe, and less optimally managed than those in traditional operating room settings. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to improve emergency management skills among NORA site perioperative staff through the implementation of emergency management simulation training. Methods: In-situ emergency management simulation training sessions were conducted in a NORA location and data was collected using retrospective pre- and post-intervention surveys, time recordings, and field notes. Findings: Results showed increased knowledge and confidence in emergency management skills among participants and decreased time required for critical task achievement in an emergency scenario. Discussion: Project outcomes suggest that implementation of emergency management simulation training within NORA sites can result in significant improvements in emergency management and thus impact morbidity and mortality in NORA sites. Indirect outcomes may include improved patient outcomes and decreased healthcare costs.
