Background: Occupational related injuries result in high costs for both employers and employees. Patients with post-concussion syndrome can experience a wide variety of symptoms and may experience difficulty returning to work. Physical therapists play an important role in the return-to-work process for these injured workers. Case Description: The patient is a 57-year-old male with impairments in all 6 recognized categories of post-concussion syndrome, with primary complaints of cervicalgia and headache. Outcomes: The patient was treated for a total of 24 visits and had the outcome of decreased post-concussion related symptoms at discharge, leading to return to full-time employment. The primary outcome measures utilized in this study were the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test and the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale. Secondary outcome measures included the Neck Disability Index (NDI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction in Balance (mCTSIB), and the Deep Neck Flexor Endurance Test. Discussion: The purpose of this case study is to outline the incorporation of supervised, symptom-limited aerobic exercise into concussion rehabilitation for an injured worker to facilitate a successful return to work.
