Background: As COVID-19 spreads around the world, more people are requiring intense medical interventions in order to fight off the dangerous virus. COVID-19 can lead to extensive stays in the intensive care unit (ICU) resulting in adverse effects such as Critical illness myopathy (CIM) leaving patients severely debilitated. Therefore, the purpose of this case report is to discuss the implications of CIM following COVID-19 and to highlight the significant functional improvements that can be achieved with a short inpatient rehabilitation stay. Case Description: A 44-year-old male was hospitalized for 56 days due to complications from COVID-19. Prior to acquiring COVID-19, he was independent with all functional mobility like caring for his young son. Upon admission to inpatient rehabilitation, the patient presented with severe weakness and the inability to perform any mobility without the assistance of two or more people. Intervention: Physical therapy focused on improving functional movements such as walking, transferring to and from bed, and negotiating stairs. Outcome Measures: The outcome measure used was a modified version of the FIM. In addition, the Berg Balance Scale could have been used as an outcome measure. Discussion: This case study demonstrates the benefit of a short bout of inpatient rehabilitation following an extensive hospitalization. In approximately two weeks, the patient made substantial progress in functional strength and endurance. Inpatient rehabilitation provided intense therapy in a brief period of time which facilitated a safe discharge home and minimal long-term effects of CIM.
