- Public Abstract (ETD)
This project includes both written and aural components featuring music by composer Althea Talbot-Howard (born 1966), focusing on selected original compositions, arrangements and transcriptions for the oboe and detailing additional possible instrumentation in the appendices.
Talbot-Howard’s educational background and Afro-British heritage strongly influence her compositions. She is a former oboist with training at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. Additionally, she holds degrees in Archaeology and Social Anthropology from Girton College at the University of Cambridge, where she was also an Instrumental and Choral Scholar. Originally, Talbot-Howard began composing for her students, an experience that is deeply apparent in her compositional output. Her works intentionally encompass a range of skill levels, making them accessible to both students and professional performers alike.
The works selected for this project represent the most distinctive aspects of Talbot- Howard’s compositional voice: works inspired by the African and Native American diasporas, transcriptions and arrangements of works by other Afro-British composers and works rooted in Christian themes. These themes were chosen because they highlight the historical depth and cultural richness that distinguish her music from much of the existing oboe repertoire, offering performers meaningful programmatic context alongside musical substance.
As the first professionally recorded project devoted exclusively to her oboe works, and one completed with the composer’s direct involvement and supervision, this project serves as both a benchmark recording and a collection of interpretive approaches on selected works. Talbot-Howard’s music is compelling for its combination of historical depth and accessibility, qualities that make it a valuable and exciting addition to the oboe repertoire. This project aims to bring these works to a wider audience of oboists, educators, and music enthusiasts.
