New Works about Nature for Sinfonietta Ensemble: A Thesis Recording Project of Commissioned Works documents the commissioning, rehearsal, and professional recording of four original compositions for sinfonietta. Central to this D.M.A. project is a collaborative framework involving the conductor, the University of Iowa Center for New Music (CNM) Sinfonietta, and four contemporary composers: Lucy Shirley, Kevin Swenson, Sanggeun Choi, and Jason Wise. Each composer was commissioned to create a work inspired by a geographically or personally significant natural environment, using nature as a unifying thematic element to explore diverse compositional voices.
The project leverages a high-level laboratory environment fostered by a long-standing artistic partnership with CNM Director David Gompper and the resident ensemble personnel. The resulting thesis provides a comprehensive scholarly record of the project’s lifecycle, including program notes, composer interviews, and a critical evaluation of the tripartite collaborative process between composer, ensemble, and conductor. Furthermore, the document analyzes the technical and logistical requirements of managing a professional-grade studio recording. This project is significant for its contribution to the modern sinfonietta repertoire (1.1.1.1–1.1.1.1–2perc–pno–1.1.1.1.1) and serves as a methodological model for future commissioned recording projects within the university setting.
