Abstract
The percentage of rural students in medical schools in the United States has been dropping for the last two decades which has helped contribute to rural physician shortages. Government agencies have typically implemented financial incentives to entice physicians to work in rural areas to combat the rural physician shortage. This study approached the problem differently by seeking to identify barriers within the rural pre-medicine student experience that may be limiting their ability to get accepted into medical school. This phenomenological study asks participants from the University of Iowa to highlight their experience in relation to their rural and pre-medicine identities. Participants identified several incidents that were unique to rural pre-medicine students that created barriers including limited high school science curriculum, limited shadowing and career exposure in their rural towns, and the role of meaning-making on student success. These findings highlight the need for higher education to better identify and academically support rural pre-medicine students, create meaningful connections with rural pre-medicine students early in their college careers, and develop K-20 pathways for rural students interested in medicine.
