Background: Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is characterized by symmetric, ascending limb weakness with hyporeflexia or areflexia. Typical signs and symptoms of GBS can include limb weakness, sensory disturbances, autonomic symptoms, and cranial nerve symptoms. Evaluation/Patient Overview: Patient presented to an inpatient rehabilitation setting with the diagnosis of GBS following acute inpatient hospital stay and bilateral upper extremity and lower extremity weakness, absent proprioception and sensation, and many other deficits. Inpatient Rehabilitation Interventions: Functional mobility training, gait training, strengthening in a neurodevelopmental pattern, early AFO prescription, family/caregiver training, and DME acquisition were the interventions utilized by the physical therapists during patient’s length of stay in inpatient rehabilitation. Outcomes: The patient demonstrated improvements during functional mobility tasks, core and lower extremity strength, and muscular and cardiovascular endurance. The patient also improved stability and positioning of bilateral ankles following use of AFOs. Discussion: The gap in knowledge of specific treatment interventions for GBS patients was addressed. The treatment interventions had a focus on both neurorecovery and compensatory strategies with an emphasis on the patient’s individual needs.
