Abstract

Background Pressure injuries are characterized by localized damage to the skin and underlying soft tissues, resulting in skin breakdown. Pressure injuries are detrimental to the patient and the healthcare facility, leading to increased morbidity and mortality for patients, along with increased costs. Pressure injuries are a “never” event, meaning they should not happen to patients, and when they do, it is a big deal for patients and the healthcare facility. Purpose The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to decrease the incidence of pressure injuries in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) through the implementation of a pressure injury prevention bundle. Methods All patients admitted to the MICU during the implementation period were to receive the pressure injury prevention checklist bundle care. Findings A total of 218 patients were enrolled in the project. 156 checklists were completed on 97 patients. The results showed zero pressure injuries during the project's implementation, with a spike of three pressure injuries experienced after the project's cessation. Discussion Despite incomplete compliance with daily checklist utilization, the primary clinical outcome objective was achieved. No pressure injuries were reported during the implementation period, suggesting a positive impact of the structured prevention strategy. Several limitations should be considered when interpreting the findings of this project. First, the relatively short implementation period may have limited the ability to detect meaningful changes in pressure injury incidence. Second, staff engagement was suboptimal.
