- Public Abstract (ETD)
In the late 19th century, composers increasingly sought a lower range from the double bass. One approach to closing this gap was extending the lowest string with the appliance known as the C-extension. This device made it so the double bass could sound a full octave lower than the cello allowing it to fully parallel the bass line.
Today, extensions are commonplace, seen in performance halls and music schools all over the world. Though prevalent, little has been written on how to use an extension. The extension brings unique challenges in shifting and left techniques and it needs to be studied thoughtfully. This essay covers techniques specific to shifting with an extension, establishing positions, thumb placement, bowing, and ideas for part preparation. These exercises along with excerpts from orchestral repertoire are used to help inform the extension-wielding double bassist on proper performance methodology framed in familiar musical contexts.
