- Public Abstract (ETD)
I first encountered the music of Marc Mellits (b. 1966) in 2017 when he was teaching at the Nief-Norf Summer Festival. I played one of his chamber music pieces and was immediately drawn to his style. This led me to explore all his compositions, eventually finding and enjoying his piano music. Years later, I found myself with a renewed interest in Mellits’s music. After becoming reacquainted with his works, I was surprised to find that his compositions for piano were not performed or recorded as frequently as his other instrumental repertoire. The goal of my project is to promote the piano music of Marc Mellits. The five solo piano compositions Mellits has written to date are 10 Colors for Piano, Agu, Bagatelle on a Theme of Beethoven, 3 Etudes, and Izaya. While some of these pieces have been recorded, there are no albums dedicated to this music. I believe that this project will bring more exposure to Mellits’s piano compositions and hopefully generate more interest in his entire musical output.
