Abstract

Computer assisted composition and analysis are powerful tools for creation and research. Such methods, however, are sometimes met with skepticism from other artists. Some believe that computational methods privilege technical features over musicality. Others find computational methods suspect because we live in a time when anyone can ask a generative AI model to write music for them at the push of a button. In the face of these criticisms, this dissertation asks: what does the computer enable an artist to do that they could not do without it? To answer this question, I present five chapters that explore different artistic and scholarly projects that are all related through their use of computational techniques. The first chapter uses the script of a lecture recital about three original works for Yamaha Disklavier MIDI player-pianos to provide broad aesthetic and philosophical justification for using computer assisted composition. The second chapter details a Max patch I constructed based on Stockhausen’s theory of a chromatic scale of tempi, showing that computational techniques can be used to model techniques developed by composers of the past. The third chapter discusses my encoding of Stravinsky’s Serial Period Corpus into the Humdrum kern format, and my subsequent computational analysis of those encodings. The fourth chapter presents an in-depth look at the computational techniques used to compose my new sinfonietta Sutter Buttes Theft in Variations. The fifth and final chapter serves as a global conclusion that attempts to tie the four preceding chapters together by pointing to several through lines that bridge the various working methods discussed. Together, these five chapters show a wide variety of working methods that are specifically enabled by embracing computation.
