Abstract
Toivo Tulev (b. 1958) is considered one of the leading avant-garde contemporary Estonian composers. His music has been performed and recorded by some of the world’s most acclaimed contemporary music ensembles and he has received numerous musical accolades, including positive reviews from those familiar with his music. Still, minimal scholarship is available on either Tulev or his music. Moreover, largely due to challenging performance factors, many choral ensembles and music listeners have not yet had a chance to experience his compositions. This dissertation will provide the most comprehensive biography to date, a thorough discussion on several key compositional attributes of Tulev’s choral music, and an in- depth analysis of several scores. Additional resources will provide a list of published and unpublished choral songs, as well as a list of professional recordings.
