Abstract
Background: Traumatic birth experiences are subjective, cause emotional distress, and can have negative effects on perinatal mental health and bonding of the family unit. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to identify those at risk for psychological birth trauma and use therapeutic conversations to reduce the negative effects of traumatic birth experiences. Methods: Universal screening for psychological birth trauma and appropriate follow up based on screening results were implemented. Findings: Results revealed that screening identified those at risk for psychological birth trauma and therapeutic support can positively alter birth perception. Discussion: The discussion suggests that perception of birth is highly individualized and can be positively influenced through therapeutic conversations. These findings highlight the importance of proper identification and follow-up when a patient perceives their birth as traumatic.
